A beach reflection

I have always liked the idea of the beach, but found the reality never really lived up to the hype. I do love the ocean, but the sand, seaweed, sunburn and potential for death by rip, shark, surfboard or other kinda takes the gloss off for me.
Then I went to the Maldives. Now this part of the world does good beach.
The water is so clear and the most beautiful, translucent hue of blue I’ve ever seen.
The fish are amazing – only a metre from shore and not afraid of curious human eyes. So colourful and graceful.
The sand is white and perfectly happy to stay on the ground, not stow away in your swimwear! There are also no cigarette butts peeking up alongside the crab holes.
Now the appeal grows when you discover most beaches come with super comfy sun lounges and shades. Of course the crowning glory is the lovely men wandering around the beach, bringing you cocktails between 10am and 6pm every day! (Why this hasn’t caught on at beaches around Australia is beyond me!?)
Yes, beaches at the Maldives have transformed my view entirely.

And let’s not forget the diverse population in attendance if people-watching is your thing: The sun-conscious who get about decked out from head to toe in protective wear, complete with umbrella in case the hoodie, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen malfunction. The would-be film/porn stars who spend their days posing and preening at the end of selfie-sticks. The sun chasers who have that worn-leather look – not sure if the swim wear is leather-coloured of non-existent… And the pink people! Those wonderfully determined folk who clearly believe that if they layer the burns, eventually they will go some shade of tan!
